Themesong: I Can’t Gaze at my Shoes Any Harder
This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren
I don’t really know much about the shoegaze movement. It really only makes me think of the Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine. And I have to be honest, I fucking hate the Cocteau Twins. Also, for me nothing Kevin Shields ever did will be as good as his work with Primal Scream. So I chose this cover of Tim Buckley’s Song to the Siren, by British indie supergroup This Mortal Coil, comprising of - among others - members of the Cocteau Twins. It’s a great song, atmospheric and dreamy, which is pretty much what shoegaze is, right?
Bonus facts: The line “Did I dream/You dreamed about me” is sampled very effectively on the wonderful early 90s rave tune ‘Temple of Dreams’ by Messiah, a song that also samples Monty Python’s Life of Brian and the Running Man. Also, Half Man Half Biscuit did a fantastic uptempo cover of this song in a session for John Peel, segueing it into ‘Vatican Broadside’, the lyrics of which are as follows: “The singer out of Slipknot went to Rome to see the Pope/The singer out of Slipknot went to Rome to see the Pope/The singer out of Slipknot went to Rome to see the Pope/And the Pope said to his aide/”Who the fucking hell are Slipknot/Who the fucking hell are Slipknot/Who the fucking hell are Slipknot/Who the fucking hell are Slipknot/In relation to my getting out of bed”“
